I've just tried mine on D cells and it doesn't exactly light up the room but to be fair the batteries have had some use so won't be at their best. If that's the case and the battery dies than your lantern is a throw away job, at least with the CPX you can use normal batteries as long as you have the D cell cartridge. Now I'm guessing (again my opinion only) that is uses a similar battery pack to what the CPX uses just without the fancy removable case. I did ask about the retro as it has a fluro bulb rather than LED and more lumens output but he said the battery is sealed within the unit and can't be swapped out for a D cell pack like the CPX ones. I guess they do it that way to stop people with single batteries from draining them by charging their lanterns (my opinion only). The guy from BCF did say the 12v charger is only a trickle charge. Is it likely that the pack is now stuffed and I have to buy a new one? Those things aren't exactly cheap at around $35. Apparently this is a big no no even though the lantern was switched off, I don't get why that would kill it. I would have charged it originally then put it away in storage but left the battery in. It was bought around October last year so is less than 12 months old, just can't find the receipt at the moment. Have done some Googling and there seems to be a common problem with the rechargeable pack not accepting charge after having been stored. I've left the lantern on all night in an attempt to drain the battery but that hasn't helped (it was still shedding a low level of light this morning). Now when I attempt to recharge the pack the charge light is not coming on at all, have tried both 240v and 12v charging. I recharged the pack from 12v while we were driving during the day and left it on charge till the green light came on and it was OK but still didn't seem to last for very long on a high setting. I found that after a couple of hours the lantern was getting really dim so switched to the 4D cartridge using alkaline batteries and it was fine. I took it away for the GTG after having recharged the pack fully before we left. I have a Coleman High Tech LED lantern that use the Coleman CPX6 Rechargeable Battery Pack or the CPX6 4D Battery Cartridge.
